Choices For High School- How Do I Choose?
At this time of the school year, parents of grade 8 students become concerned and anxious about which high school their child should attend. Whether your child attends public, independent or parochial school, the choices can feel overwhelming to parents and students alike.
Here are a few quick tips to help you and your child make the best school choice:
Include your child in the decision-ultimately parents need to make the final call, however your child's input is critical to consider.
Consider all aspects of your child's development- social, academic as well as their learning style
Speak with your child's current school to inquire about their Transitions to Grade 9 information sessions. If your child has an IEP, and/or an IPRC, check with the school about a special education, transition meeting soon.
The best decisions are INFORMED decisions! Whatever school may be right for your friend or relative's child may be totally wrong for yours. The best advice is to attend as many Open Houses as possible with your child and form your own opinions!
Ask questions of the school administration about homework policies, safety- bullying, cyberbullying policies, etc., extra curricular opportunities, parent involvement, student support services, as well as costs.
Know your family values. If your child attends French Immersion, does anyone in your home speak French? Who will help with assignments? Does your family practice the same religion as the parochial school your child will attend? How do you feel about single-gender schools? Have these important conversations between yourselves first before discussing them with your teen.
Remember how it felt to be 13? While your child may appear to be independent and capable, they still need to you support them as they transition to secondary school. Navigating the next 4 years can be overwhelming to even the most confident child. Keep in touch with your child's school so that you can be the best support to your child.
